Escape the Approval Maze

Escape the Approval Maze!

It's a truth that many of us encounter on our journey: not everyone will understand our dreams, our passions, or the path we've chosen. You may have experienced this yourself when sharing a deeply held vision with someone, only to be met with skepticism, doubt, or even outright dismissal. And perhaps most poignantly, this can sometimes come from those closest to us – our family, our dearest friends, those we expect to be our biggest supporters.

This can be disheartening, even painful. When those we love and trust don't understand our vision, it can feel like a betrayal of sorts. We might start to question ourselves, wondering if our vision is too ambitious, too unconventional, or simply unrealistic. We might feel tempted to abandon our dreams, to take the "safe" path, or to shrink ourselves to fit into someone else's idea of what is possible.

But in those moments, it's crucial to remember a few things:

  • You don’t need their permission: If they aren’t funding it, fucking you, feeding you, or paying your bills, their opinion doesn’t really matter, and even if they are doing one of those things, it is just a consideration.

  • Your vision is yours: It was born from your unique experiences, your deepest desires, and your innate wisdom. It is a reflection of your soul's calling, and that is inherently valuable.

  • Others are limited by their own perspectives: This is especially true of those closest to us. They often have deeply ingrained beliefs about who we are and what is possible for us, based on years of shared history and expectations. They may be operating from a place of love and concern, but their vision for your life may not align with your own.

  • Doubt is a natural part of the creative process: Even the most visionary leaders, artists, and innovators have faced moments of self-doubt, and often, doubt projected onto them by those closest to them. It's a sign that you're pushing boundaries and venturing into the unknown.

  • You are not alone: There are others who will resonate with your vision, who will be inspired by your courage, and who will support you on your path. Seek out these kindred spirits, and let their belief in you fuel your own.

One thing we talked about in the Drama No More 2024 workshop was that drama arises when we are reacting to a situation, often caught up in other people's "stuff." In this case, the drama can be the negativity or lack of understanding from others, especially those closest to you, when you share your vision. This is a crucial point: the act of sharing can trigger their own insecurities, limiting beliefs, or past experiences, leading them to respond in unsupportive ways. They may not be reacting to your vision, but to what your vision stirs within them – their own fears about your potential, their discomfort with change, or their need for you to stay within their comfort zone.

So, how do you stay true to your vision, especially when those closest to you don't see it?

  • Trust your inner knowing: Cultivate a deep connection to your intuition, that quiet voice within that guides you. Learn to discern between the voice of fear and the voice of truth, and to recognize when others are projecting their own fears onto you.

  • Focus on your "why": Reconnect with the core purpose behind your vision. Why is this dream so important to you? How will it make a difference in your life or in the world? Let your "why" be your anchor and your compass, especially when others try to steer you off course.

  • Choose your audience wisely: Not everyone deserves access to your dreams, especially in the early stages. Share your vision with those who have earned your trust and demonstrated a capacity for understanding and support. Sometimes, this may mean seeking support outside of your immediate circle.

  • Be prepared for a range of reactions: Understand that people may react with everything from excitement to skepticism, and that this range of reactions may be even more pronounced with those closest to you. Try not to take negative reactions personally, and focus on staying grounded in your own truth.

  • Communicate with clarity and passion: When you do share your vision, express it with confidence, conviction, and enthusiasm. Let your passion be contagious, and help others to see what you see. This can be challenging with those who think they know you best, but it's essential to communicate your authentic desires.

  • Take inspired action: Don't get bogged down by analysis or overthinking, or by the reactions of others. Take small, consistent steps towards your vision, and let the momentum carry you forward.

  • Celebrate your progress: Acknowledge and appreciate every milestone, no matter how small. This will help you stay motivated and build confidence in your ability to manifest your vision, regardless of who is celebrating with you.

  • Surround yourself with believers: Seek out mentors, coaches, friends, or communities who uplift and inspire you. Their support will be invaluable on your journey, especially when those closest to you are struggling to understand.

Ultimately, your vision is a gift – to yourself and to the world. Don't let the doubts of others, even those you love most, diminish its power or your resolve. Trust in its unfolding, and never stop believing in the extraordinary potential that lies within you.
