Radical Honesty vs. Repair
The King and the Box of Betrayal
I remember this year I felt like a King. I had just received my settlement from brain surgery right before Christmas, and for the first time in my life, I had the means to be the "Grand Giver." I was 21, vibrating with a new sense of independence, and I wanted everyone to feel that magic. I even bought my Nana that Queen Anne bedroom set she’d always dreamed of—delivered right to her door on December 23rd.
But on Christmas Day, the vibe shifted. Under the tree was a big box from my Nana. She had always been my biggest supporter—the one I could actually talk to when my mother’s "I don’t want to talk about it" attitude toward my coming out made the room feel cold. I ripped that paper off like a kid, expecting something quirky or thrifted.
Instead, I found the "Complete Guide on How to Pray the Gay Away." It wasn't just a pamphlet; it was a full-blown curriculum of videos, cassettes, and books. In an instant, my "King" status evaporated. It was a massive betrayal, a "Fatal F" of Fallacy wrapped in holiday paper, telling me that the most authentic part of my soul was a problem to be solved.
The "Fatal F" of Fallacy: Why Conversion Therapy is a Soul-Killer
In our Freedom Systems framework, we talk about Fallacies—those mistaken beliefs that the "Default You" clings to. The ultimate fallacy is the idea that you are "broken" and need "repairing."
This month at Orange Dragonfly, our theme is "Shower Me In Numb". Conversion therapy is the most extreme form of forced numbing. It demands that you disconnect from your core emotions and physical truths to fit a narrative that isn't yours.
The Emotional Cost: When you are taught to name your truth as "sin," you lose your internal compass.
The Mental Health Toll: The statistics are heartbreaking and undeniable. LGBTQ+ youth who undergo conversion therapy are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide.
The Stagnation: Numbing your identity drains your vitality and stalls your progress toward your True Awesome Life.
You Are Perfect, Whole, and Complete
Here is the "Positive Spirituality" truth: You are a Divine design. You are Perfect, Whole, and Complete exactly as you are. Any system that tells you otherwise is operating out of fear, not spirit.
In my story, the "Spiritual Architect" showed up in the most unexpected way. My mother—the woman who previously wouldn't even discuss my being gay—stood up. She defended my right to exist as I am. By the time we got home from dinner, that box of "Pray the Gay Away" tapes was gone. She had thrown it out. She chose my wholeness over a toxic tradition.
Sovereignty Over SCOTUS
With the recent Supreme Court rulings like Chiles v. Salazar, the legal gates have creaked open for this kind of "speech" to return under the guise of the First Amendment. But listen to me: A court ruling cannot overrule a Celestial Law. The law of the Universe says you are a magnificent creator. People can say whatever they want in the "marketplace of ideas," but you have the power to choose which "ideas" you allow into your sacred space. You have the agency to widen the gap between their "Default" noise and your internal Truth.
Burning the Box: Your Resource for the Journey
If you are currently in the "dumpster fire" of someone trying to "fix" your soul, please know there are life rafts available. You don't have to navigate the "Fatal Fs" alone.
The Life Raft: If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out to The Trevor Project (Text 'START' to 678-678) or Trans Lifeline. These are spaces of radical acceptance where your "Perfect, Whole, and Complete" self is celebrated, not "repaired."
You are not a project. You are a masterpiece. Burn the box, keep the Queen Anne furniture, and walk into your "True Awesome Life" with your head held high.
